Meknes

After our trip up north during Spring break we took a day trip to Meknes. We had collected baby pajamas/sleepers, toys and misc clothes to give to an orphanage up there and this was the perfect opportunity to deliver them. We have a friend, Soufiane, there who graciously met us, showed us to the orphanage, around Meknes and his family even fed us lunch. It was a true Moroccan lunch with couscous, lots of food and warm hospitality.
There was a lot of babies in the orphanage which Souifane told us they have already been adopted and there is a waiting list.  Once the children turn 6 years old they are transferred to a different building that we also visited.  It was a very nice facility.  The kids go to school just like most other Moroccan kids and we even met some of the older young men who are now in college.

These little troopers and us as well carried up all the donations up 5 flights of stairs!

Meknes has a dungeon that we visited.  At one time Morocco made money through piracy and held the captives in this massive dungeon.  (most of it has been sealed off to prevent tourists and visitors from getting lost down there.)
